In a Board Meeting on May 20th, the Boston public transport operator MBTA announced that it will place this important project with BBR Verkehrstechnik. This decision marks the US market entry and the beginning of the largest project ever awarded to BBR.
The Green Line, one of four tramlines in Boston, will be equipped with an innovative train protection system for a total of about 82 million Dollars. This comprises a renewal of the signaling as well as implementation of trackside and carborne train protection equipment. It also introduces a driver assistance system for 300 trains.
Through this project MBTA wants to make improvements to the safety of the Green Line. Significant accidents in 2008 and 2009 have led to a redevelopment of an integrated safety concept.
